15 years ago when you wanted to find a product or service, how did you do it? The Yellow Pages, right? You would open up your kitchen cabinet, grab that thick yellow book and then begin flipping pages until you found what you were looking for. Well, search engine optimization is the new Yellow Pages. If you want to find a product or service these days, where do you go to find it? Google, right? If not there you may use another search engine like Yahoo or Bing. Regardless of which one you use, this is where people are searching to find what they are looking for.
If you are a business owner and you want your business to be found, then you need to show up on the first page of Google. And not only do you want to be found on the first page, but you want to be found for the products and/or services that you offer. This is where search engine optimization (SEO) comes in.
What is SEO?
Search engine optimization is where you “optimize” individual pages of your site in such a way that the search engines will send traffic to your site for your desired keyword or phrase. For instance, if you sell “auto paint supplies” and you are located in Phoenix, then you need to have a page on your website that talks all about that. Then once the content is there, we go through and analyze that page. We make sure that it appears in such a way that the search engines know exactly what this page is about.
Another important part of SEO is off-page optimization. This means optimizing key elements that are not located on your website. For instance, link building is one of the biggest components of SEO and it is an example of off-page optimization. You need to have links to your site from other credible websites. This tells Google that your site is credible as well because of the authority of the sites that are willing to link to you. What do I mean by authority? Well, domain authority is a scale from 1 – 100, the higher the number, the more authoritative your website is. You can go to moz.com to check your domain authority. The more links you get from credible websites, the more your domain authority will increase.
The Benefit of SEO
At the end of the day, optimizing your website will help you get more qualified leads to your site, which will then turn into more sales. Think about it this way, if someone is looking for the product and/or service that you offer and they come to your site, they are a strong lead and will likely take action.
